Introductory Remarks by Editor-in-chief of the Scientific Journal

«Modern Linguistic and Methodical-and-Didactic Researches»

Issue 4 (31) of the scientific journal contains the following sections: “Linguistics”, “Methods and Didactics”, “International Communication”, “Theory and Practice of Translation”. The fourth issue of the thirty first series contains 11 scientific articles.

Issue 4 (31) offers its readers the most relevant theoretical and practical research results and helps to get insight into promising tendencies in scientific researches in linguistics, methods and didactics of foreign languages teaching, international communication, the problems of theory and practice of translation, considered not only as a process, but also as a result. The works included in this issue contribute to approach to scientific truth that is an important mission of every linguist.

Linguistic section contains the articles where the phenomenon of political correctness in English culture is studied on the material of paralympic vocabulary (by T.A. Martseva, Yu.V. Kobenko, O.V. Solodovnikova, E.S. Riabova), analysis of colloquial expressions of English professional discourse in media is presented (by E.N. Malyuga, V.E. Ermishina), evaluative means used by scientific supervisors in research advisors’ reviews in the framework of academic discourse are concerned (by A.A. Vodyanitskaya).

The first article of the section “Methods and Didactics” outlines special teaching method “Shenbang” (by Deng Jie), the second publication presents criteria for assessment of the foreign language speech competence of future economists (by G.V. Sorokovykh, A.O. Andrukh). The final article of the section concerns the problems of blended foreign language learning, combining traditional and distant forms (by E.A. Alexeeva, S.Yu. Buryakova).

The section “International Communication” starts with the article about pragmatic and cultural aspects of modern educational phraseology (by N. Ghezaili). It follows by the second part of the article, published in the issue 3 (43) of the journal about linking markemes in the British prose of the first half of the XX century (by O.G. Artemova).

The section “Theory and Practice of Translation” presents three publications of current interest. The first one is about specifics of translation of IT-sphere therminology from English to Russian (by V.A. Fedorov, O.G. Nekhaeva). The second article refers to the phenomenon paroemia in literary texts translated into French (by E.Y. Lapaeva). The third article investigates punctuation interference in the process of translation of the Moroccan bilinguals from French to Russian (by E.V. Kashkina, T.V. Gilyarovskaya).

The first article of the section “Linguistics” is by the group of authors: PhD in Philology, Associate Professor Tatiana A. Martseva, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Yuriy V. Kobenko, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor Olga V. Solodovnikova (National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University) and PhD in Philology, Associate Professor Elena S. Riabova (Samara National Research University named after Academician S.P. Korolev). It concerns ambiguous phenomenon of political correctness so widely interpreted nowadays. The research was conducted on the material of English – an official language of the paralympic movement. The nominations for some categories of sportsmen with disabilities who take part in competitions haven`t been well developed yet or are altogether absent that required much attention of the linguists to the choice of the vocabulary, that is especially relevant nowadays when the perception of political correctness in society is sometimes ironic. Linguistic representation of political correctness is mostly realized by means of euphemisms. Also, nowadays special positive attitude of the native English people to the paraolympian athletes and to the people with disabilities in general, is noted.

The article of the section “Linguistics” by Doctor of Philology, Professor Elena N. Malyuga and the student of the Master`s course Valentina E. Ermishina (Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia) analyzes colloquial expressions in English professional discourse of media in the linquo-pragmatical aspect. The interrelation between the phenomena digital civilization and colloquial expressions is reveled in speech discourse. By the examples of lexical-and-pragmatic field pragmatics of the influence of the information on the recipient is determined. Special function of metaphor, narrative sentences on the syntactic level and phrasal verbs on the lexical level is performed. Due to their expressiveness colloquial expressions serve important pragmatic function.

The next article of the section is by PhD in Philology, Associate Professor Albina A. Vodyanitskaya (Moscow City University). In this work evaluative characteristics of the formation of academic discourse are investigated, strategies and thematic areas relevant for the research review of master`s student and bachelor`s student are revealed. When evaluating scientific work a supervisor uses a range of evaluative means, expressing his or her opinion about student`s work among which are: implication, intensification, recommendation and ascertaining. Negative evaluations are implicated in recommendations.

The section “Methods and Didactics“ begins with the article of PhD in Philology, Lecturer Deng Jie (Sun Yat-sen University of Guangzhou, China) who describes «Sanban» – special experimental method of school teaching, that is oriented on the individuality of every pupil, it takes into consideration their abilities and needs in knowledge more than traditional educational system does. This method of education including four didactic principles, enables to develop initiative and reveal the creative potential of the students. According to the author, twenty years of this method`s practice in the experimental schools of China has proves its effectiveness and innovative character.

The next article of the section presents the research of Doctor of Pedagogy, Professor Galina V. Sorokovykh (Moscow City University) and Senior Lecturer Alina O. Andrukh (Moscow Polytechnic University). The authors analyze the features of the procedure of assessment (assessment and self-assessment) of the foreign language speech competency of the students of economic department. According to the educational program the range of group and individual criteria is identified for more objective assessment of speech competency, coefficients of assessment are determined.

The final article of the section is by Doctor of Philology, Professor Elena A. Alexeeva and by PhD in Philology, Associate Professor Svetlana Yu. Buryakova (Voronezh State University) is about the issue of blended foreign language learning as transition form between traditional in-class and distant on-line learning with the use of information technologies and as one of the teaching trends in the Universities in the modern conditions of pandemic. Having considered the facts of risks, the authors come to the conclusion that blended learning has high potential if you work out a proper approach to the range of technical and methodical problems that a teacher faces when organizing this mode of learning effectively. Necessity of organizing adaptive courses of foreign language for professional communication is noted. The approach, principles and technology for the course of “Linguistic support in professional activity” for the students of Master` course of the program “Language support for project development in the field of international cooperation” are offered.

The section "Intercultural Communication" begins with an article by Doctor of Philology, Professor N. Ghezaili (Algiers University 2 named after Abu Elkassem Saad Allah) on the pragmatic and cultural specifics of modern educational phraseology. Explanatory and bilingual dictionaries of different periods are analyzed on the material of the Russian and Arabic languages, their positive and negative sides are displayed. On the basis of the criteria developed by the author, identified after the analysis, the stages of creating an educational Russian-Arabic phraseological dictionary with a description of its structure and cultural commentary are proposed. The author notes that the need for such a dictionary is determined by the necessity for correct perception and use of phraseological units and aphorisms of the Russian language for the Arabic reader. The author's opinion on the interpretation of aphorisms on an equal basis with phraseological units in phraseology seems to be quite correct.

The next article of the section "Intercultural Communication" by PhD in Philology, Associate Professor Olga G. Artemova (Voronezh State Technical University) is a final part of her article, published in issue 3 (43) of our Journal on linking markemes between the prosaic texts of British writers of the first half of the 20th century. After analysis and stratification the author identifies dominant, peripheral and nuclear markemes, centers of attraction with the markeme nucleus and markeme periphery as well as the markeme proximity index. The data processing of the English-language texts was carried out by the software complex for thematic analysis of vocabulary “ProTemAL-Engl”, created by the programmers of the Voronezh State University under the scientific guidance of Doctor of Technical Sciences I.E. Voronina. The scientific consultant and author of the idea is Doctor of Philology, Professor of VSU A.A. Kretov.

The section "Theory and Practice of Translation" includes three articles. The first article by Doctor of Philology, Associate Professor Valery A. Fedorov and PhD in Philology, Associate Professor Olga G. Nekhaeva (Voronezh State Technical University) examines the problems of translating computer terminology from English into Russian, which presents certain difficulties for students, since it is hard to find both the meanings of terms, and the decoding of abbreviations in dictionaries. Difficulties also lie in the fact that the field of information technologies is a special communication environment and as a result it requires the use of various translation strategies. Based on the analysis of scientific and technical translation texts performed by students of the Faculty of Information Technology and Computer Security and students of the additional professional education program "Translator in the field of professional communication", the authors propose acceptable ways of translating English abbreviations, multicomponent IT-terms into Russian.

The next article of the section "Theory and Practice of Translation" by a teacher of the French language Evgeniya Yu. Lapaeva is devoted to the problem of the renomination of proverbs and sayings (paroemias) in literary texts. The author makes a comparative analysis of the paroemias, examines the ways of their translation from Russian into French. Various interpretations of nominations are distinguished with the help of adequate translation methods, which shows, in the author's opinion, broad renominative possibilities of integration and adaptation in the French linguoculture of colloquial, hard-to-translate expressions of Russian culture.

In the final article by the PhD in Historical Sciences, Associate Professor Elena V. Kashkina and by the teacher Tatyana V. Gilyarovskaya (Voronezh State University) investigate the peculiarities of the transmission of punctuation marks in French under the influence of the Arabic language of the Maghreb countries, based on the material of French-speaking writers, in the light of such a phenomenon as linguistic interference. The authors note different punctuation-graphic ways of translating "a special mode of language that conveys modes of consciousness". The importance of punctuation in the translation of oral speech and the uniqueness of the French language in a particular region are emphasized; it is especially noted that punctuation interference finds its expression in the syntactic structure of a sentence. According to the authors, in the French language a special part is given to the speech pause, which serves as an indicator for the placement of punctuation marks.

The Scientific Review is presented by the publication of PhD in Philology, Associate Professor Valentina I. Chechetka (Voronezh State Technical University) which is dedicated to the All-Russian educational online conference 2020 "Learning German – discovering the world", which took place on October 16, 17 and 18, 2020 at the Goethe-Institut with the support of the Interregional Association of Teachers and Teachers of the German Language (IAPN) within the framework of the Year of Germany in Russia 2020/2021, implemented by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Moscow, the German-Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Goethe-Institut.

In the current issue of the Journal relevant articles by Russian scientists working in 7 universities of Russia are published: Tomsk (National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University), Samara (Samara National Research University named after Academician S.P. Korolev), Moscow (Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, Moscow City University, Moscow Polytechnic University), Voronezh (Voronezh State University, Voronezh State Technical University); and scientists from two foreign universities – from the Republic of China and the Algerian People's Democratic Republic: Guangzhou (Sun Yat-sen University) and Algeria (Algiers University 2 named after Abu Elkassem Saad Allah).
