§7. Безличные предложения

Предложения типа Утро. Зима. Сегодня понедельник. Сейчас декабрь в английском языке соответствуют безличным предложениям. В английских безличных предложениях обязательно подлежащее, которое выражено местоимением it; на русский язык оно не переводится, но является обязательным элементом английского предложения.

It’s morning now. It’s winter. It’s Monday today. It’s December now.

Запомните вопросы и ответы:

What is the date today? (It is) December the seventh.

It is the seventh of December.

What month is it now? It is October.

What day is it today? It is Monday.

What year are we in? We are in 201….

Условно безличные предложения можно разбить на следующие группы, которые:

1. Называют, определяют время года, дня, день, месяц, время и т.д.:

It is 5 o’clock. Сейчас пять часов.

It’s the beginning of spring. Начало весны.

2. Говорят о состоянии природы:

It’swarm (cold). Тепло (холодно).

3. Говорят об отношении человека к чему-либо, о возможности, о необходимости:

It’s possible. Возможно.

It’s difficult. Трудно.

It’s necessary. Необходимо.

It’s interesting. Интересно.

4. Говорят об изменении состояния природы:

It gets (becomes, grows) cold/light/dark/warm/ Холодает/светает/темнеет/теплеет.

5. Обозначают явления или состояния природы:

It rains. Идет дождь

It snows. Идет снег.

Exercise 1. Make up the following sentences interrogative and negative:

1. It often snows in November. 2. It seldom rains here. 3. It gets colder. 4. It is early spring. 5. It is already getting dark. 6. He is growing old. 7. In England it rains more often than it snows.

Exercise 2. Answer the following questions:

1. Does it often snow in winter? 2. Does it rain in autumn? 3. Does it rain in summer? 4. Does it get light early or late in summer? 5. Does it become warmer in spring? 6. Is it light or dark in the classroom? 7. Is it raining now?

Exercise 3. Translate into English:

Exercise 1. Put the following sentences into Past and Future paying attention to the forms of the verb “to be”. Translate all the three variants:

1. I am very busy. 2. John is in the USA. 3. She is at the lecture. 4. Mike is free in the evening. 5. The child is 10 years old. 6. This work is interesting. 7. The expedition is in Africa. 8. The new film is long. 9. My mother is at home. 10. The workers are at the factory. 11. The children are at school. 12. The students are at the Institute.
