TEXT: INSPECTION OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS AND THEIR MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS

Fire extinguishers must be inspected regularly to ensure that they are accessible and operable. Servicing of portable fire extinguishers is the responsibility of the property owner or building occupant.

Fire inspectors should include extinguisher inspections in their building inspection and pre-incident planning programs. During the inspection, the inspector should remember that there are three important factors that determine the value of a fire extinguisher: its service-ability, its accessibility, and the user's ability to operate it.

The following procedures should be made:

  • Check to ensure that the extinguisher is in a proper location and that it is accessible.

  • Inspect the discharge nozzle or horn for obstructions.

  • Check to see if the operating instructions on the extinguisher nameplate are legible.

  • Determine if the extinguisher is full of agent. If an extinguisher is found to be deficient in weight by 10 percent, it should be removed from service and replaced.

  • Check the inspection tag for the date of the previous inspection, maintenance.

  • Examine the condition of the hose.

If any of the items listed are deficient, the extinguisher should be removed from service and repaired as required. The extinguisher should be replaced with an extinguisher that has an equal or greater rating.

All maintenance procedures should include a thorough examination of the three basic parts of an extinguisher: mechanical parts, extinguishing agents, and expelling means. Building owners should keep accurate and complete records of all maintenance and inspections that include the month, year, type of maintenance, and date of the last recharge. The inspector is responsible for reviewing these records.

Fire extinguishers should be thoroughly inspected at least once a year. Such an inspection is designed to provide maximum assurance that the extinguisher with operate effectively and safely.

Stored-pressure extinguishers containing a loaded stream agent should be disassembled for complete maintenance.

All carbon dioxide hose assemblies should have a conductivity test. Hoses found to be nonconductive must be replaced.
