TEXT: TYPES OF PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS (1)

There are many different types of portable fire extinguishers: pump tank water extinguishers, stored pressure water extinguishers, aqueous film forming foam extinguishers, halon extinguishers, carbon dioxide extinguishers, dry chemical extinguishers, extinguishers with powder extinguishing agents for metal fires. Also they may be classified as hand-carried, backpack or wheeled ones.

Pump tank water extinguishers are applicable to Class A fires only. They are available in sizes of 6 L to 20 L. Under normal conditions, their stream reach is 9 m to 12 m. The discharge time is 45 seconds to 3 minutes, depending on the size of the unit. Both hand-carried and backpack extinguishers may be equipped with a double-action pump that delivers a continuous stream of water. Backpack extinguishers have several useful purposes. Because they are so portable, they are used for brush fires where fire apparatus are unable to access. They are also useful at structure fires.

Stored-pressure water extinguishers are only used on class A fires as well as for extinguishing chimney flue fires. They are available in sizes of 5 L to 10 L. Under normal conditions, their stream reach is 9 m to 12 m. The discharge time is 30 to 60 seconds, depending on the size of the unit. The water is discharged by compressed air that is stored in the tank with the water.

Aqueous film forming foam extinguishers are suitable for use on Class A and Class B fires. The most common AFFF extinguishers are 10 L in size. Their stream reach is 6 m to 7.5 m. The discharge time is about 50 seconds. AFFF extinguishers are very similar to the stored-pressure water extinguishers. The main difference is that in addition to water, the tank contains a proportionate amount of AFFF concentrate. An AFFF extinguisher has a special aspirating nozzle that provides a better quality of foam than a regular nozzle provides. The foam is applied across the entire width of the fire. The foam also has good wetting and penetrating properties on Class A fires.

All these extinguishers must be protected against freezing if they are going to be exposed to temperatures less than 4°C. Freeze protection is accomplished by the addition of an antifreeze solution to the water.
