Speaking Lesson Topic: There’s a kid in every one of us

Activity 1. It is believed that there’s a kid in everyone one of us so… if you had a trampoline in your back yard would you jump and yell like a crazy? Write a list of words you associate with the word “childhood”. Compare your list with the rest of the group.

  • What’s your earliest memory? How old were you?

  • Were you a naughty child? What’s the naughtiest thing you did?

  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of being the only child?

  • Do you think that childhood is shorter these days than it was in the past? Do children grow too fast nowadays?

  • In the book by J.M. Barry, the character Peter Pen never grew up. Do you think that there’s a part in every one of us that never grows up and doesn’t want to grow up? What are the advantages and disadvantages of being “young at heart”?

  • What did you dream about when you were a kid? Did your dreams come true?

  • What did you want to do in the future? Did you change your mind when you grew up? Do you have your dream job now?

  • Were you punished being a kid? What were you punished for?

Activity 2. Match the following proverbs with the corresponding explanations below. Then discuss whether you agree or disagree with them.

  1. Children should be seen and not heard.

  1. If you don’t punish children by caning them (or smacking them) they will not learn how to behave properly.

  1. Spare the rod and spoil the child.1

  1. We can use the character of a child to predict which personality they will have when they become adults.

  • What’s the difference between a nuclear family and extended one?

  • Why are one-parent families becoming more popular these days?

  • How important is for your family to have regular get-togethers? Do you enjoy family get-togethers?

  • Would you like to have a twin what are the advantages and disadvantages of having a twin?

  • Who do you look like in your family? Who do you take after the most?

  • Who are your favorite relatives and why?

  • If you were your parents would you grow yourself up in a different way if yes, what would you change?

  • What are the worst mistakes parents can make?

  • Do you agree with the following quotation: “A friend’s someone who knows all about you… but still loves you”? Can a parent be a real friend to a kid?

  • Who was your best friend when you were child? Do you think it’s essential for a kid to have friends? Do you have friends from your childhood?

  • Did you fall out with your friends when you were a kid? How did you make it up?

Activity 4. Read the text. Did you play party games when you were a child? What’s your favourite party game?
