Unit 1. Computer millenium

COMPUTER TALKING

1. Work in small groups. We are living in the third millennium. What most remarkable things is it associated with? Make up the list and compare your ideas with the rest of the group. What 3 things are the most popular? Try to explain why.

2. Have a look at the pictures. What can you see and what do they make you think about? Share your ideas with your groupmates.

3. Work in pairs. What aspects of your life do you usually use computers in? Share your ideas with a partner. Do your answers coincide?

4. Work in groups of three and discuss how the following professions might use computers. Make some notes and be ready to report your ideas to the class. Remember the most unusual answer.

Football coaches; surgeons; architects; politicians; interior designers; landscape gardeners; musicians; sales people; robbers.

5. Work in pairs. Find out this information from your partner according to the example:

download music from the Internet (what site)

A: Have you ever downloaded music from the Internet?

B: Yes, I have.

A: What site did you use?

B: I used different English-speaking sites.

PC at Home

Common uses for the computer within the home: computer games, working from home, banking from home, connecting to the Web.

Computers in Education

CBT (Computer Based Training)

  • Computer Based Training (CBT) offers a low cost solution to training needs where you need to train a large amount of people on a single subject.

  • These programs are normally supplied on CD-ROM and combine text, graphics and sound.

  • Packages range from general encyclopedias right through to learning a foreign language.

Office Applications

1) Automated Production Systems

  • Many car factories are almost completely automated and the cars are assembled by computer-controlled robots.

  • This automation is becoming increasingly common throughout industry.

  1. Design Systems

  • Many products are designed using CAD (Computer Aided Design) programs to produce exact specifications and detailed drawings on the computer before producing models of new products.

3) Stock Control

  • Stock control is ideal for automation and in many companies it is now completely computerized.

  • The stock control system keeps track of the number of items in stock and can automatically order replacement items when required.

4) Accounts / Payroll

  • In most large organizations the accounts are maintained by a computerized system.

  • Due to the repetitive nature of accounts a computer system is ideally suited to this task and accuracy is guaranteed.
