b) Look through the text and find the sentences which discover the main sense of the text:
THE AUTO THIEF
The modern day auto thief is the chameleon of the criminal element in our society, nondescript by choice for protection and proficiency in his chosen vocation. Blending into normal everyday activities, so not to attract the attention of patrolling police officers, the thief scouts, locates, and obtains his objective: "Steal a vehicle."
Needing little in the way of special equipment (an ordinary screwdriver will suffice), the thief can steal the average unprotected passenger vehicle. However, the auto thief ranges wide in his sophistication as far as tools and techniques are concerned. Enterprising thieves have designed and manufactured their own tools to bypass locks and alarm systems. The vast majority rely on the standardized tools of the trade: the slam puller, coat hanger, slim jim, needle nose pliers, screwdriver and channel lock pliers, all of which prove extremely effective against the average unprotected passenger vehicle.
Though thieves vary in accomplished skills and sophistication of equipment, they do share operational procedures. Detection and recognition of these procedures are most important in removing the guise so critical to the thieves' success.
Ex. 23. Review the text:
THEFT OF A VEHICLE
The vast majority of vehicle thefts are done on order. A specific vehicle is sought, located and stolen to meet a demand for vehicle parts and/or whole vehicles. The demand is created by auto rebuilders, thieves (themselves who use the vehicles in retagging) and salvage switch operations.
However, there has been a recent increase in theft by young amateur thieves. The majority of which, have gang affiliations. Again, a specific vehicle is sought, generally a General Motors vehicle without an alarm. The vehicle is stolen, driven to a secluded area and stripped of the radio, wheel covers and/or tires then left abandoned. This type of theft represents only a small percentage of the overall auto theft statistics. But, of late, has shown an increase. It does, however, serve to demonstrate the ease at which a vehicle can be stolen without acquired skills or specialized tools. It is faster and easier to steal the whole vehicle than just remove the wheel covers.

Ex. 25. Role play: THIEF STRIKES IN THE NIGHT:
The Boston family packed their car in order to go to Italy for their annual holiday and left it in the garage. They intended to set off first thing in the morning. At 3.30 a.m. they were alerted by their neighbour who informed them that the garage door was open and their car had been broken into.
Simulate the following dialogues:
the Bostons and their neighbour, the Bostons and the police, the neighbour and the police, Mr and Mrs Boston. Give a detailed list of all the items in the suitcases.
Ex. 26. Word square. Find the hidden words from the word field 'motor car'. Go in all directions. Write down the words, indicating where they begin, e.g. 14 C: FOGLIGHT.
There are 22 words altogether.
