UNIT 10.

Grammar: THE INFINITIVE.

Инфинитив – это неличная форма глагола, аналогичная неопределенной глагольной форме в русском языке, то есть отвечающая на вопросы: «Что делать?» или «Что сделать?».

Инфинитив характеризуется наличием частицы to , стоящей перед глаголом: to + V0

(например, to work, to study, to discuss, to invent, e.g.)

Перевод инфинитива очень многообразен. Он зависит от того, какую функцию в предложении он выполняет, а эта функция обусловлена местом инфинитива в предложении.

Инфинитив может выполнять в предложении следующие функции:

1.ПОДЛЕЖАЩЕЕ (если стоит в начале предложения, и при этом невозможно определить другое подлежащее).

2.ОБСТОЯТЕЛЬСТВО ЦЕЛИ (если стоит в начале предложения, но при этом имеется другое слово, играющее роль подлежащего).

3.ОПРЕДЕЛЕНИЕ (если стоит между подлежащим и сказуемым и отвечает на вопрос «Какой?»).

4.ДОПОЛНЕНИЕ (если стоит после сказуемого и идущего за ним дополнения)

5.ЧАСТЬ СКАЗУЕМОГО (если стоит после глагола - сказуемого и дополняет действие).

Рассмотрим примеры перевода инфинитива на следующих примерах:

To perform arithmetic operations very quickly and accurately was necessary for working out our joint project.

Выполнять арифметические действия очень быстро и точно было необходимо для разработки нашего совместного проекта.

TASK 1.

Translate the sentences paying attention to the Infinitive; point the function of the Infinitive in each sentence:

1.To write a good computer program is not easy.

2.To write a good computer program its author had to learn the problem in detail.

3.The mathematical model to be recently adopted was worked out by a joint group of Russian and British program makers.

4.A digital electronic computer was initially designed to perform different arithmetic operations quickly and accurately.

5.Many digital household devices were invented to improve the quality of audio and video signal transmitting.

6.To perform any operation a computer should be programmed.

7.To feed correct and detailed information into the computer is the first step to get the result required.

TASK 2.

My ambition is to become a specialist in bio-cybernetics. I’m a nurse at the hospital for reproductive medicine and I know how much depends on computer technology in diagnostics. To get thorough knowledge in informatics and cybernetics is absolutely necessary for me.
