7. You can also make reservations by telephone.

Learn how to do it. Read the 3 dialogues and act them out:

a)  Clerk: Center Hotel. Good morning. Can I help you?

Lavrov: Good morning. I’d like to reserve a single room with bath beginning

next Tuesday.

     C: Name, please?

L: Victor Lavrov.

C: How long will you be staying, Mr Lavrov?

L: I’ll be staying for ten days. And one more thing. I’d like to have a quiet room, not overlooking the street.

C: Just a moment... Unfortunately, we haven’t got any such accommodation available at the moment, but the hotel’s situated in a very quiet park. I’m sure you’ll enjoy your stay here whichever room you book.

b)  A: Hello... Is this the Prince George Hotel?

     Rec.: Reception. Good morning.

A: Ah... Good morning. Can you tell me the price of a double room with private bath, please?

Rec: Certainly, sir. A double room with private bath is 7 pounds.

A: Mmm... Thank you. I would like you to reserve a double room with private bath for two nights – the tenth and eleventh.

Rec: One moment, sir. I’ll make sure... Yes. The tenth and eleventh will be all right. Do you want me to reserve a room with twin beds or a double bed for you, sir?

     A: Twin beds.

Rec: What name is it, please?

     A: Mr and Mrs Johnson.

Rec: What time do you expect to arrive, sir?

A: Oh, about four o’clock in the afternoon.

Rec: If you come later than six let us know, please.

A: Of course... but we are unlikely to be late. Thank you, sir. Good-bye.

c)  Receptionist: Thai Grand Hotel. May I help you?

Mrs Ting: I’d like to make a reservation, please.

Receptionist: Just a moment. I’ll put you through to the reservation desk.

Clerk: Reservation. How can I help you?

Mrs Ting: I’d like to make a reservation for six nights next week for Mr. Tashinoma of Japan Electronics, please.

Clerk: Certainly. What days will he be staying?

Mrs Ting: He will be arriving next Thursday and leaving Wednesday.

Clerk: And what kind of room would you like to book?

Mrs Ting: I’d like a single room with bath, please.

Clerk: A single with bath... yes, that’s no problem. Could I have the name again, please?

Mrs Ting: Yes, it’s for Mr Tashinoma of Japan Electronics.

Clerk: That’s fine. We’ll be expecting Mr Tashinoma on Thursday then.

3. Hotel Rating

Hotel star ratings are systems that rank hotels according to quality. Star rating systems are intended to serve as a guideline for guests when making hotel reservations. While star ratings can be helpful when booking hotels rooms, there is no standardized star rating system. In Europe, hotels are ranked from one to five stars, with five stars being the highest rating possible. The same applies in the United States, but an incremental half star may be given where for example a two star hotel is better than standard but does not warrant a three stars, etc. In order to promote the development of tourism and protect the interests of tourists, some relative unified standards have been formulated to designate the hotels. Thus, the hotels are compared and classified according to their facilities, scale, service quality and management.
