My family is average. They are my wife, a son, a daughter and I.

My wife’s name is Nina. She is thirty-one. She is a charming woman. She has big hazel eyes and short black hair. Nina is an assistant station-master. She is very good at cooking and sews perfectly.

My son’s name is Roma. He is seven years old. He is medium-height and medium-built. He is a pupil. His hobby is playing football.

My daughter’s name is Nastya. She is only four. She is a nice girl. She has dark wavy hair and blue eyes. Nastya goes to kindergarten. She enjoys dancing and playing with toys.

My name is Aleksey. I am thirty-four. I am rather tall. I also work at railway. I am a train driver. I like my profession. In my free time I enjoy fishing and hunting.

In the evening we like to watch TV and play with children. Sometimes we go to the cinema or to the circus.

GREAT BRITAIN

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. The United Kingdom consists of four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Their capitals are London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast respectively.

The British Isles are separated from the European continent by the North Sea and the English Channel. The UK is one of the world’s smaller countries. Its population is over 57 million.

There are a lot of rivers in Great Britain, but they are not very long. The Severn is the longest river, while the Thames is the deepest and the most important one.

The climate of the British Isles is mild the whole year round.

The UK is a highly developed industrial country. It is known as one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of machinery, electronics, textile, aircraft and navigation equipment.

The UK is a constitutional monarchy. The powers of the British Queen are limited by Parliament. The country is ruled by the elected government with the Prime Minister at the head. The British Parliament consists of two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

TEXT 2

The basic tasks set before the railway transport are: to meet the needs of national economy’s increasing volume of traffic; to improve transport facilities for the population, to speed up delivery of freight and passenger service, to create a reserve of traffic capacity and traffic carrying capacity.

These problems should be solved on the basis of accelerated technical progress, growth of labour productivity and increase of traffic efficiency. To cope with these tasks the plan envisages: construction of second main tracks and new lines, introduction of automatics and telemechanics, further electrification of high-density railway lines.

Further development of the railways must be based on increased speeds of trains. These problems will be solved by inculcation of high-power locomotives, high-capacity cars, and more efficient use of the railway facilities.
