CANADA

Canada is the world’s second-largest country. Stretching westward from the Atlantic Ocean to the shores of the Pacific Ocean, and northward from its border with the United States to the icy waters of the Arctic Ocean, Canada is a huge and fascinating land of contrasts.

The capital of Canada is Ottawa. The official languages are English and French.

In a land as vat as Canada, it is natural to find a great variety of climate. Although overall the country is cool, there are some remarkable differences from region to region. The Atlantic provinces and the lowlands region of Ontario and Quebec have a cool continental climate characterized by hot summers and bitter cold winters. But the closeness of the ocean noticeably moderates the climate in the provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland so that summers are cooler and winters not so severe. Throughout the whole region precipitation is even and moderate all year.

Canada is a constitutional monarchy and a federal state with a democratic parliament. The Parliament of Canada, in Ottawa, consists of the House of Commons, whose members are appointed. Members of Parliament are elected every four years.

Main cities are Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

More than a hundred Muscovites helped to build Siberia’s first underground rail line in Novosibirsk. It has nine kilometers and five stations. Muscovites took part in designing and putting together the tunnel shields and the building of the tunnels and the stations. The weather was freezing there, and since the granite and marble finishing slabs for the stations were frozen Metro-builders had to warm them before they can be used. Before the Moscow work crew came to Siberia, it had worked at Metro projects all over the country, and nowhere else did it meet so many difficulties as it met there.
