Effective firefighting depends on qualified and experienced firefighting personnel and is provided by the following means:

• Fire protection equipment. It includes various types of fire engines, fire extinguishing installations and fire technical equipment.

• Industrial machines re-equipped and adapted for firefighting purposes.

• Fire extinguishing substances. They are as follows: water, foam, powders and gases.

• Means of communication and lighting.

• Various kinds of transport.

Fire engines are divided into main, special and support vehicles according to their destination.

Main fire engines are designed to fight fires in cities, towns and villages or at various industrial enterprises. They include fire extinguishing tankers, fire extinguishing trucks of high pressure, pump-hose extinguishing trucks, fire extinguishing powder engines and airfield fire extinguishing engines. Fire extinguishing tankers are intended for delivering the firefighting crew and firefighting facilities to the fire scene. These engines can smother fires with water or air-mechanical foam. They can be light (with water capacity up to 2000 litres), medium-level (with water capacity from 2000 to 4000 litres), and heavy (with water capacity from 4000 litres and more).

Special fire engines are designed for doing peculiar tasks at the site of fire. They are as follows: aerial ladders, elevated platforms, fire pumping stations of gas, gas-water, powder and air-foam extinguishing, fire extinguishing trailers, unified engine heaters, firefighting planes, helicopters, trains, tanks and ships. Auto-pump fire extinguishing stations are designed for delivering water where water pipe lines are absent. Fire extinguishing trucks with ladder mast are intended for extinguishing fires with powder, water or air-mechanical foam through the roof monitor or foam generator. Fire extinguishing forest units smother fire on the ground with fire extinguishing liquids. Forest fire extinguishing trucks transport the firefighting crew and equipment to the place of fire and deliver firefighting liquids to the site of fire. Unified powder monitor units put out fire A, B, C classes and electrical installations.

Support vehicles include fire smoke exhausters and water protection techniques equipped with special sound and light signals. They provide refueling and maintenance of various types of firefighting equipment.
