1. Перепишите и переведите следующие предложения. Найдите все слова, имеющие окончание “s”, определите, какую функцию это окончание выполняет (см. Образец 1), т. Е. Является ли оно:

а) показателем 3-го лица единственного числа глагола в Present Indefinite;

б) показателем множественного числа имени существительного;

в) показателем притяжательного падежа имени существительного.

4. Перепишите и переведите предложения на русский язык, обращая внимание на перевод неопределенных и отрицательных местоимений.

1. No part of England lies more than one hundred miles from the coast. 2. Some farms concentrate on pig production, particularly in eastern and northern England and in Northern Ireland. 3. Numerous advertisements are everywhere in London Underground: on the walls of escalators, on the platforms; special posters advertise everything – food, medicine, clothes, furniture, cigarettes etc. 4. Any student of our group can speak about London’s history.

5. Перепишите и переведите следующие предложения. В каждом предложении определите видовременную форму глагола-сказуемого и укажите его инфинитив (см. образец 2).

England

1. England occupies the largest part of the island of the Great Britain. It has an area of more than 50 thousand square miles and population of some 46 million people. Together with Wales it forms the southern portion of the island of Great Britain. England’s boundaries on the North is Scotland, on the East is the North Sea, on the South are the Straits of Dover and the English Channel and on the west are the Atlantic Ocean, Wales and the Irish Sea.

2. In the North of England the Apennines run from the Scottish border to Derbyshire. The coastline has some bays and excellent natural harbours. The most famous ports of England include London, Bristol, Portsmouth and some others. The greater part of the land is flat. The most important rivers are the Thames, the Severn and the Trent.

  1. England is densely populated part of the United Kingdom. A county is the chief regional administrative unit of England. This part of the United Kingdom has 46 counties. The capital of England is London.

  2. England is a highly developed industrial country. London is the biggest industrial city. The most important branches of industry are instru­ment engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, as well as food, clothing and fur­niture processing. London is also the center of commerce. It is financial and business center of the country.

  3. Birmingham is the country’s second largest city. During the industrial revolution, the city and the surrounding area of the west midland, known as the Black Country, developed into the country’s major engineering center. Factories of Birmingham still convert iron and steel into a vast variety of goods. On the western side, the Manchester area became, in 19th century, the world’s leading producer of cotton goods. Sheffield became a center for the production of steel goods. Further north, around Newcastle, shipbuilding is the major industry.
