В Японии наиболее распространенными средствами массовой информации являются телевидение и газетные издания. Как правило, японцы черпают информацию о текущих событиях из телевизионных новостей, а затем узнают подробности из газет. Они проводят в среднем 3,5 часа в день перед экраном телевизоров и около 40 минут за чтением прессы. Такая разница во времени отражает различия в природе двух средств массовой информации. В действительности население считает их примерно одинаковыми по своей значимости.
Япония занимает одно из ведущих мест в мире по общему тиражу ежедневных газет. Тираж превышает 70 млн. экземпляров, что составляет 548 экземпляров газет на 1000 человек.
Японские газетные издания можно разделить на три вида: общего характера, спортивные и специализированные. Газеты общего характера бывают центральными, т.е. охватывающими всю страну, региональными, выпускаемыми в ряде префектур, или префектуральными, распространяемыми в пределах одной префектуры. Центральные газетные издания являются крупнейшими и насчитывают около половины от общего газетного тиража. Крупнейшими газетами считаются «Иомиури», «Асахи», «Майнити» и «Санкей» с тиражами выше 2 млн. экземпляров.

Journalists gather news in a number of different ways. They may get stories from pressure groups which want to air their views in public. They seek publicity for their opinions and may hold press conferences or may issue a statement/ press release. A person who especially wishes to attract news attention will try to include a sound bite in what they say. It is particularly hard for journalists to get material in the silly season. Journalists also get stories by tapping useful sources and by monitoring international news agencies like Reuters. The more important a story is, the more column inches it will be given in the newspaper. Journalists of different political persuasions often put their own gloss/ spin on a story and some journalists gather stories by muck-raking.
