Chapter IX

The Spring has Come!"

  1. Intone the paragraph and learn it by heart.

Mary opened the box. There were several beautiful books. Two of them were about gardens. There were also two or three games, and a beautiful little writing case. Mary had not expected Mr. Craven to remember her and her hard little heart grew quite warm. She ate her breakfast quickly, and went straight to Colin’s room, carrying the box. He was lying on his bed looking pale and tired, but he was pleased to see her. Mary showed him the presents, and together they looked at the garden books.

  1. Change the sentences from active voice into passive (all possible variants that make sense).

  1. Mr. Craven sent a box with some presents to Mary.

  2. Mary showed Colin the books with pictures.

  3. The next morning Mary and Colin ate their breakfast together.

  4. Dickon was holding a new born lamb in his arms.

  5. Dickon had found the lamb in the moor and brought it home.

  1. Prepare the discussions on the topics (in groups of three).

  1. Mary, Dickon and Colin are discussing the flowers in the secret garden.

  2. Mary and Colin are asking Dickon everything about animals.

  3. The children are discussing what they are going to do in the secret garden.

  1. Retell the text using new words and word combinations.
