My cousin translates scientific treatises 1 from German into English. For instance, he is translating an article by Einstein.

Is he really translating so great a scientist?

Yes, he is. And an exceptionally good translation I consider it.

Do you? Is there anything particularly good about it?

Certainly there is. It is a perfectly close translation.

A close translation? How can you judge 2 about it?

Why? In all the places where I don’t understand Einstein in the original, I don’t understand him in my cousin’s translation either.
