VIII. Work in small groups. Read the following statements on some of the problems connected with education in the USA. Compare them with the problems existing in this field in your country and discuss them with your partner(s).

1.A major conflict has always existed between the two goals of American education. One is the comprehensive education providing opportunity for all. The other is highly selective education that aims at the training of academic and scientific elites. Some feel that more money and effort should be spent on improving comprehensive education; others think that money should be provided for increasing scientific knowledge. And some people demand that money should be spent on both.

2.A system of examinations is questioned as the method of testing a person’s knowledge and ability. The arguments against the exams are:

exams are a test of memory, not ability;

exams cause anxiety, because often future is decided by them;

results of exams are often subjective because examiners are human;

education should train you to think for yourself, exam system doesn’t

The arguments for exams are:

exams offer the quickest way of assessing a candidate;

exams are constantly being improved;

there are complex checking systems used by examiners to ensure fair results;

the exam system may not be perfect, but it’s the best we have, it may be painful, but so are many things in life.
