The educational system of G.B. is extreamely complex and bewildering. It is very difficult to generalise about particular types of schools as schools differ from one to the other. The departament of education and science is responsible for national educational policy, but it doesn't employe teacher or prescribe corricular or text books. Each school has it's own board of governers consisting of teachers, parents, local politicians, members of local community, businessmen and sometimes pupils. According to the law only one subject is compulsary. Such as religious instruction. Schooling for children is compulsary from 5 to 16, though some provision is made for children under 5 and some pupils remain at school after 16 to prepare for higher education. The state school system is usually devided into 2 stages (secondary and primary). The majority of primary schools are mixed. They are subdevided into infant schools(ages 5 to 7),and junior schools(ages 7 to11). In junior schools pupils were often placed in A,B,C or D-streams, according to their abilities. Under the pressue of progressive parents and teachers the 11+ examination has now been abolished in most parts of the country. There are some types of schools in G.B.Grammar schools provided an academical cause for selected pupils from the age of 11 to 18. Only those children who have the best results are admitted to these schools. They give pupils a high level of academic education wich can lead to the university. Technical Schools offer a general education with a technical bias and serve those pupils who are more mecanically minded. The corricular includes more science and mathematics. Secondary modern schools were formed to provide a non-academic education for children of lesser attainment. The corricular includes more practical subjects. The comprehensive schools brings about a general improvement in the system of secondary education.

The system of secondary education in Ukraine includes primary forms and junior and senior secondary forms. Children usually go to school at the age of 6 or 7. There are some preschool institutions, like nursery schools or kindergartens, but they are not obligatory. Primary forms comprise 1 to 4 forms. Junior secondary forms comprise 5 to 9 forms. After the 9th form children can enter technical schools of different types. Those who want to enter higher educational institutions should complete 10—11 forms. Students can also enter higher educational institutions after graduating from specialized colleges or lyceums. They prepare students in different fields, whether the humanities or the sciences. Some of them are organized under the authorities of higher educational establishments. The system of higher education is presented by universities, polytechnic institutes or specialized institutes. Universities offer a five-year course of study and usually have from six to twelve departments. Institutes train specialists for industry, agriculture and economy. Most of them have been conferred the status of Academy or University recently. Students are also offered postgraduate education and scientific research work. Nowadays due to the state of our national economy not many young people are engaged in the research work. But still in some fields of science there are outstanding discoveries and research papers.

Some universities and institutes have refresher courses. Recently a great number of private educational establishments have appeared. Some institutions have fee-paying groups or departments. The students may get education there at the same high level as in the state institutions.

My working day

My week-days doesn’t differ much one from another. I go to college five days a week. That’s why I have to wake up at 7 o’clock every morning. Sometimes I want to stay in bed for some more time but my mother always insists on my getting up. I put on my bathrobe and slippers and unwillingly go to the bathroom. A cold shower makes me feel not so sleepy, then I dry myself on a towel and hurry to the bedroom.

I switch on the TV-set. I see just the time for a cartoon. You may ask me why I don’t do my morning exercises. From time to time when I see smiling slim girls on TV briskly doing their exercises to music I swear I shall get up earlier and do my morning exercises every day but it don’t last long and soon I forget about it.

Then I do my bed, dressed myself and have my breakfast.l usually have a cup of tea or coffee, an egg, bread and butter. After breakfast I rush to college,as I live far away I go by bus or by tram. It takes me more time to go by tram. If I have little time I go by bus. My lessons begin at 8 o’clock. We have four lessons every day.

At II o’clock we have a long break. As I cannot get home for lunch I take it at the dining-room of our college. For lunch I have meat or fish with potatoes and cup of strong tea or coffee with a pie.

At 2 o’clock the classes are over and I go home. When I get home from college I have dinner. My dinner usually consists of three courses. For the first course I have some soup, then some meat or fish. For dessert I have some stewed fruit or ice-cream.

After dinner I do some work about the house (wash dishes, sweep the floor, go shopping) and sit down to my lessons. I spend a great deal of time on them. It takes me 2 or 3 hours to do my home assignments. At 8 o’clock all my textbooks and notebooks are put into the bag and I can watch TV or read a book, look through papers and magazines. Sometimes when my friend calls for mc we go for a walk. We talk about different things and usually have a good time. At I I o’clock tired after a long working day I go to bed and in some minutes fall a sleep.
