The purpose of the belles-lettres style is not to prove but only to suggest a possible interpretation of the phenomena of life by forcing the reader to see the viewpoint of the writer( cognitive function of the belles-lettres style).

Features ob bel-ls.

1. Genuine imagery achieved by ling-c devices.

2. The use of w.s in contextual m-g,

3 A voc-ry reflecting to the author's personal evaluation

4 peculiar selection of voc-ry & syntax.

Verse

Compositional patterns of rhythm making up сlassical verse are based on:

1)alternation of stressed and unstressed syllables,

2)equilinearity, that is, an equal number of syllables in the lines,

3)a natural pause at the end of the line, the line being a more or less complete semantic unit,

4)identity of stanza pattern,

5)established patterns of rhyming.

Free Verse is characterized by:

1) a combination of various metrical feet in the line;

2) absence of equilinearity

3) stanzas of varying length.

Rhyme, however, is generally retained.

Accented Verse is a type of verse in which only the number of stresses in the line is taken into consideration.

The number of syllables is not a constituent; it is irrelevant and therefore disregarded.

26. Belles-lettres style: the l-ge of drama

4 peculiar selection of voc-ry & syntax.

the language of plays is entirely dialogue. The author's speech is almost entirely excluded except for the playwright's remarks, and stage directions, significant though they may be.

L-ge of the characrers is not exact reproduction of the coll-l norms but playwright seeks to reproduce actual conversation as far as the lit-ry norms allow. Features: stylization of coll-l l-ge (to suit the general aesth-c aims of the st.); redundancy of info-n caused by the necessity to amplify the utt; simplifying the syntax to fragments of sent-s; sequence of sent.s reflects the sequence of thought, no digressions from the course unless this was the deliberate intention of the playwright.

27. Publicistic style & it’s l-ge.

The general aim - is to exert a constant and deep influence on public opinion, to convince the reader or the listener that the interpretation given by the writer or the speaker is the only correct one and to cause him to accept the point of view expressed in the speech, essays or article.

. 1. Oratory and speeches. (Oral). Direct contact with the listeners permits the combination of the syntactical, lexical and phonetic peculiarities of both the written and spoken varieties of language. Certain typical features :

direct address to the audience (ladies and gentlemen, honorable member(s), the use of the 2nd person pronoun you, etc.), sometimes contractions (I’ll, won’t) the use of colloquial words.

Repetition, parallel constructions, antithesis, suspense, climax, rhetorical questions and questions-in-the-narrative.

2. The essay. The essay is a literary composition of moderate length on philosophical, social, aesthetic or literary subjects. Personality in the treatment of theme and naturalness of expression are 2 of the most obvious characteristics of the essay. An essay is rather a series of comments than a conclusive argument. Feature articles are generally published in newspapers, especially weeklies and Sunday editions. In comparison with oratorical style, the essay aims at a more lasting, hence at a slower effect.

3. Articles. Irrespective of the character of the magazine and the divergence of subject matter – whether it is political, literary, popular-scientific or satirical, all the features of publistic style are to be found in any article. The character of the magazine as well as the subject chosen affects the choice and use of stylistic devices.
