10. Name 4 different types of nonverbal communication. Provide examples of how each of these forms of communication differs across cultures.
1) Gesture:
ok-in Britain it means that everything is good, well or O.K. In
Turkey, the OK sign means one is a homosexual. Thumbs Up-in most
American and European cultures meaning things are going according to
your plans, but in Islamic countries sign translates into a rude.
2)
Eye Contact. In America and Latin America not looking the other
person in the eye is a sign of disrespect. In other cultures, i.e.
Asian cultures, prolonged eye contact is especially offensive.
3)
Touching. Handshakes are usually acceptable almost everywhere, even
between strangers; however, kissing on the cheek isn't – for many
people in Asia such actions are interpreted as an offense or even a
violation of one's private space.
4) Posture. The most common
example is the habit of many American executives to rest with their
feet on their desk, which in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe is
considered highly offensive.
