Second Trimester
•Uterus enlargement becomes obvious
•End of the fourth month, fetus begins to move
•In response to aldosterones water retention begins
•Increased production of RBC
•Large increase in maternal blood volume
•30 to 40% increase in cardiac output
Second Trimester – Breasts Dev
•In response to estrogen, progesterone and prolactin the breasts increase in size
•Breasts secrete colostrum
–Thin, yellowish fluid
–Contains antibodies
–Levels of antibodies increases during development
Third Trimester
•Weight gain for mother
•20 to 25 lbs
•Fetus placenta and fluid accounting for 5 to 7 lbs
•Constant pressure on the bladder
•Braxton-Hicks contractions
•Fetus changes position become oriented toward the pelvis
