How to pour a pavement

If you want a pavement or a patio in your garden, first you have to make the foundation. Then you can pour the pavement. Here is how you do it.

When the forms are set, you are ready for the concrete. The following guide will take you through the basic steps of pouring, spreading, striking, finishing and curing a concrete pavement.

1. Start pouring the concrete from one end of the form while the helper uses a shovel to spread it. Tamp the concrete into all corners.

45

2.Use a screed board to smooth the concrete. Move the screed slowly across the form using zigzag motion. A helper can shovel extra concrete into any hollows.

3.Before and after floating you must edge the concrete. Begin with running a trowel between the concrete and the form. Follow up with an edger.

4.After screeding and edging use a darby or wood float. Floating smooths down high spots and fills small hollows. In smaller areas use the darby. Keep the tool flat but don't let it dig in.

5.After the water sheen has disappeared from the concrete, but before the surface has become really stiff, give it a final floating with a wood float. If you want a smoother surface, wait a few minutes and repeat the operation, this time with more pressure.

6.Slabs need to be moist-cured to keep their surfaces from drying too fast. Cure your concrete by keeping it wet. You can cover the slab with plastic sheeting. If no covering material is available, you'll need to keep the surface damp by hand-sprinkling. Curing should last at least 3 days or even longer in cold weather.
