OUR ACADEMY
The Siberian Automobile and Highway Academy is one of the largest in Russia. It was founded in 1930 as the Siberian Automobile and Highway Institute and had only two faculties. In 1930 there were “Road Construction” and “Automobile” faculties with 10 and 8 chairs respectively where 280 people got higher education. Now it is a large school where more than 7,000 students are currently enrolled. About 5,000 students are full-time students, the rest are part-time students. There are also about 140 graduate students. They conduct independent research work and have pedagogical practice. The Academy comprises six faculties, each faculty including several qualifications: Automobile Transport faculty, Transport Technological Machinery, Information Management Systems, Highway Engineering, Civil Engineering, Economical Engineering faculty.
The course of study at the academy lasts five years. The students of all faculties study general-educational and specialised subjects. The firstand the second-year students study the former. These subjects are: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Philosophy, History, Foreign Language and Computer Study. Specialised subjects are studied by the thirdand the fourthyear students, depending on their qualification.
Since all environmental problems have chemical processes involved the main subject studied by the future environmental engineers is Chemistry with the following trends: Inorganic, Organic, Analytical, Physical and Colloidal Chemistry. The students listen to the following courses of lectures: Theoretical Principles of Environment, General Ecology, Industrial Ecology, Processes and Apparatus of Environmental Engineering, Ecological Examination, Ecological Monitoring.
Ecologists are trained at the Highway Engineering Faculty, which presupposes the study of such subjects as Resource-Saving Techniques on Transport, Ecology of Urban Transport Networks, etc. Besides, they fulfil laboratory works and have practice at industrial enterprises where their theoretical knowledge can be applied.
Every engineer should be acquainted with labour protection and safety engineering rules. With this purpose the course of lectures on Safety Engineering is also delivered at the Academy.
Our Academy is quite large and there are four buildings. There are many large halls for lectures that house more than 100 people. The acoustics in such halls is very good but sometimes it is very noisy when students chat during the lecture. We have many laboratories provided with
8
up-to-date equipment where students can carry on lab works and conduct various experiments.
So we can say that studying at our Academy gives a solid background in all spheres of knowledge and prepares competent engineers for practical work.
