Human Factors training. Communication

Effective communication, which includes all transfer of information, is essential for the safe operation of flight. The message might be transferred by speech, by written word, by a variety of symbols and displays ( e.g. instruments, charts, maps, etc.) or by non-verbal means such as gestures and body language. As for communication between a pilot and a controller, the computerization of cockpits has led to question whether it was necessary for ATC officers to always use voice communication and whether there would be any benefits in a system where controllers send messages electronically-DATALINK. Systems. Datalink allows routine air traffic instructions and requests to be sent as text messages instead of via traditional voice communication. Datalink (CPDLC-controller pilot Datalink communication) has reduced airspace congestion, and many people think it has helped to make communication fast and safe. There can be no doubt that Datalink has an important place in the future of civil aviation communications. But when there is a need to communicate beyond simple routine messages – for example, in an emergency – there is no substitute for talking. Potential misunderstandings are a natural feature of all verbal communication. Pilots and controllers face this danger when they speak to each other and are urged to constantly check, confirm and clarify information. An instruction given by a controller should normally be read back. As well as the potential for important mistakes being made, this is a rather inefficient use of time where messages can be submitted electronically.

There are several hazards which reduce the quality of communications:-failures during transmitting process (e.g. the sending of unclear or ambiguous message, language problems); difficulties caused by the medium of transmission (e.g. background noises or distortion of the information); expectation bias, misinterpretation of the arriving message or even its disregard. Ambiguous, misleading or poorly constructed communication can lead to human errors.
