PLANNING OF AIRPORTS FOR DEVELOPING NATIONS
The developing nations are known to constitute a major percentage of the world’s land (63 percent) and population (73 percent) and yet have only 10 percent of domestic air transport operations. Each nation has many problems and airports are considered to play a great role to overall national objectives. There exist national, regional, and local organizations as well as international agencies involved in the development of an airport.
The need for economical operation and efficient airspace utilization has required airlines to operate larger aircraft. This trend has a direct relationship between the design and location of airports to accommodate such aircraft. New generations of large aircraft will have a profound influence on the airports of developing nations. Both the size of the aircraft and their passenger capacity will affect ramp space and passenger terminals. Cargo facilities will be affected as well.
Thus authorities responsible for airport planning in the developing countries have two main tasks to be solved. First, to modernize their airports to accommodate present multiengine jet transport. Second, to study the new airport developments in the advanced nations since better facilities are expected to be needed in a few years for future transports. The large scale growth of tourism has already forced the new airport development in a number of developing counties.
