THE STATE OF ENGLISH

The text I am going to render is about changing of English and necessity of its protection from foreign influence.

In the first part the author assumes that English has leapt

out of the confines of its origin there is no more one true English in the world and its various forms have the same importance. Then he precises that the English of television newsreaders, of up-market commercials, and serious political announcements may be considered the true English by the most of the people and he called it Received Pronunciation or «RP».

The second part reports at length the problems of spreading of singular English pronunciation worldwide, that it cannot be enforced. The author points out that it goes its own way, or the way of its speakers and the fact that changes in human life demand and create new words with more or less passive phonetic changes. Any efforts to shorten English as in 1984 of George Orwell do not work.

In the third part the author shifts focus to standarts of correctness, in particular connected to English. This part attracts attention to importance of choosing the right register in our speech and that even errors in pronunciation or using a wrong accent in a particular moment may give offence. The author points out that the final stop consonants in substandard speech are disappearing and we are hearing a glottal stop instead now. He reckons that we can do little about this and that Standart English with RP is necessary.

In the final part the author makes a statement that we cannot prevent linguistic change from happening but literary English certainly needs protection.
