Unit 1. Types of computer. 1. What are the common types of computer? There are some common types of computers such as: laptop, desktop, notebook and tablet. They have different part like the monitor, keyboard, mouse, computer case and its components. 2. What do office employees use computer for? Employees use computers for saving and processing information, for messaging, sending e-mails and do cooperating work on the server. 5. What types of computers are being used more often nowadays? Look at 1. Unit 2. Monitors. 1. What do you look for in a computer monitor? I like bright screen with pleasant contrast. It is also very important computer to have high resolution, because I prefer watching quality movies and games. The most appropriate size of monitor for me is 13 inches in diagonal (or to be more exact laptops size), it is compact and lightweight.

2. What are some differences between old and new monitors? Nowadays people use LCD monitors, the main feature and difference from old monitor is the liquid crystal basis and flat screen. Compared the old CRTs monitors, the main component of which are cathode ray tubes, LCD monitors have better resolution, contrast, brightness. The picture in such monitor is more pleasant for human eyes. 5. What are some features to look for in today`s computer monitors? Look at 1. Unit 3. Keyboards. 1. What are the functions of the keys on a standard keyboard? Keyboard consists of some registers, for example, QWERTY, numeric keyboard, function register. The Alt key is used for entering different commands, pressed with other keys. Also, you can type capital letters with the combination of Shift and exact key or press Caps Lock.

2. What are the different ways of typing capital letters and symbols? If you need all text to be capital, press Caps Lock and type the letters after. The Shift key is used to mark some letters, to do this operation with pressing the Sift key and the exact letter from QWERTY keyboard. 5. What are ways to improve typing efficiency? If you need to type a big text, you should know and use the standard commands and key combinations for saving time. For example, how to mark capital letters (Caps Lock, Shift key + letter). For copy out the text use function key Ctrl pressed with letter C, or to mark all text Ctrl+ A. Unit 4. Mice. 1. What are some common types of mice? Nowadays the most common type of mice is cordless mice(less expensive), which can ne LED and laser, there mice don`t connect to the computer be wires, so it is appropriate for gamers and those, who work outside. The less common mouse is ball mouse, some years ago it was very popular, but people have found the better alternative(less expensive). 2. Why is reliable mouse important to computer users? Mouse is the main component of a computer with which user interact the computer. It should correctly react on the act and displacement. Also more modern models of mice afford to scroll wheel for easy scrolling and have bigger photo memory. 5. What is the least expensive and most common type of mouse? Look at 1. Unit 5. Inside the computer. 1. What are some parts inside the computer? The computer case consists of motherboard, power supply, hard drive, CD disk, ports. It also has heat sinks and fans to circulate the air in the power supply. The motherboard contains the central processing unit.

2. What is the purpose of a motherboard? The motherboard contains the central processor, which runs the programs and apps, and electrical connection, which receives energy from power supply and distributes it. Also it has ports and memory chips. 5. What are some components of a motherboard?

Unit 6. Memory storage devices. 1. What are some different types of memory storage devices? CD-Rs are used for burning data one time. If you want save the data and then delete it, you can use flash drives. It is also more comfortable, because nowadays you can share the information from flash drives to the smartphone or computer with USB or port.

2. What is the general storage capacity of different memory storage devices? CDs have capacity of 700 MB. DVDs hold about 4,7 GB. Flash drives now have different capacity, between 2 GB and 64GB.

5. What is the capacity of each type of storage mentioned? Look at 2.

Unit 7. Printers. 1. What are some common types of printers? There are 2 common types of printers, such as inkjet and laser printers. Inkjet printers use ink, instead of laser printers, that use toner cartridges Also there is a matrix printer.

2. Do you think some printers are better than others for certain jobs? Yes, of course. Lasers printers unlike inkjet have faster ppm and dpi, so more suitable for printing big amount of pages. Inkjet printers are more chipper, so usually used for private printing at home. By the way laser printers are less messy, also they are two-sided. Or printing photos inkjet printers are thought to be better, because liquid inks spread out better over the paper.

3. Why does the employee recommend the laser printers? Look at 2.

Unit 8. Scanners. 1. What do people use scanners for? People use scanners for scanning documents at home or the office, be this way they can save digital copies of exact photos or jobs. Also if you have all-in-one machine, you can scan, copy, print and fax the data.

2. What are some features to look for in scanners? When people are ready to buy scanner, they look for some features like high ppi, optical resolution, high color depth, automatic document feeder, big scan area and may be multi functionality( when machine can copy, scan, print, fax).

Unit 9. Cameras. 1. What are some features of digital cameras? There are some features of digital cameras as digital zoom, high capacity SD card, which reduces image compressing. Such cameras are able to focus images digitally and they have white balance software to make photos more realistic. Cameras with optical zoom allow focusing images by moving the lenses.

2. How do digital cameras store images? Digital cameras store photos on own memory or on the SD cards. If images are too large, it can be compressed. 5. What are some features of digital cameras? Look at 1. Unit 10. Smartphones. 1. What are some common uses of smartphones? Smartphones are the new portable devices. You can make and receive calls with it. These devices have such service capabilities as touchscreen, also they are GPS capable, or to be more exact you can find your location or download the way to exact place. Moreover you can transfer music on MP3 player or view and download photos with sync.

2. How have smartphones changed the way people communication? With smartphones people can easily keep in touch, call or send messages and e-mails to each other. Besides they can transfer photos, videos and music by Bluetooth. But there some minuses of using smartphones as the reducing of the real conversations, because people write all their minds in massagers and don`t see the emotions of each other, but it mostly concerns to teens.

Unit 11. The User interface. 1. How does a user interface allow someone to interact with a computer? User can click on the desktop with right- click and run the interface. For example, create the folders and sub-folders, drop icons to the folders and also change the placement order of icons on the desktop.

2. How are files usually organized and accessed on a computer? The files can be organized randomly by default in order of download, the last in the end of string. Also files can be organized in the folders, created by user with function “Create a New folder”. If you want to open it, click on the dropdown menu, find a folder and click on the file.

5. What does the guide provide? Tell how to open dropdown menu, create folder and drag here files.

Unit 12. E-mail 1. 1. What are some tools for keeping e-mails organized? Emails can be saved in 4 folders: the inbox, the sent mail, the drafts and the trash folders. E-mails arrive in an inbox and the copies of sent emails are kept in the sent mail folder. You can send e-mail only to one person or to the group of persons. Also you can reply them and forward the answer to the whole group of the recipient.

2. Why it is important to keep e-mails organized? It is important to separate work emails from private, so you can mark important emails. In the sent folder emails are organized by time and data. If you want to find sent emails or drafts they are located in the appropriate folder. Besides the delete emails are kept in the trash folder. It saves the time of email-client. Unit 13. E-mails 2. 1. What are different ways to send e-mails? After creating the e-mail, user should write a recipient, a subject and message. You can send e-mail only to one person or to the group of persons. Also you can reply them and forward the answer to the whole group of the recipient. Besides you can CC or BBC e-mails to send copies to another person.

2. What do different e-mail functions do? To send CC emails means to resent the copy of somebody`s massage, BBC emails contains hide persons in this list of recipient and nobody can see the account of this person. If you have a conversation with only one person, you can answer him clicking the icon “reply” and if you have the conversation with a group, click “reply all”. Unit 14. E-mails 3. 1. What are some common problems with the e-mails? The main problems with the e-mails are:

  • the wrong configurations of the program;

  • probable typos in the SMTP server or in the POP3;

  • an attachment in the document can be too large. If it exceeds the maximum size, the email will not send.

  • the domain name of the recipient can be pointed incorrectly;

  • a recipient can configure the spam filters on the e-mail.

  • there are no Internet connection;

2. What are some solutions to e-mail problems? If the e-mail doesn`t send, you should check the configurations, the text on the typos, to reduce the resolution and size of the images and attachments in the file. Also you can make mistakes in the domain name of the recipient. Moreover, the problem can be simpler than you think; it is the lack of Internet connection.

Unit 15. E-mails 4. 1. How is instant messaging used? Instant messaging is a program of messaging over the internet connection. It allows having a real-time one-to-one chat. A user`s status can be free, if he is available for messaging, of status ‘busy’, if he don`t. In Ukraine are popular such programs as Telegram, Viber, WhatsUp.

2. What are the benefits and risks associated with the instant messaging in the office? Instant messaging re useful for large companies there employee are in different parts of building or even country. Employee can send messages in real time to get information quickly. But employee could also use instant messaging for personal conversations. Tis reduce productivity.
