Achilles Statue
The largest statue in Hyde Park is the Achilles Statue, installed here in 1822 to honor the Duke of Wellington, the victor over Napoleon's army at Waterloo. The bronze statue was cast from cannons that were captured from the French. The statue was created by Richard Westmacott, who based its design on the
statues of Castor and Pollux at the Piazza del Quirinale in Rome. The statue was nude but true to their reputation, the prudish Londoners were shocked and Westmacott was forced to add a fig leaf, because of the quite ridiculous appearance of the statue.
The Rose Garden
There are more than just statues and memorials in Hyde Park though. Most of the park consists of open grassy areas dotted with large trees. There are very few flowerbeds or shrubs, but an exception is the beautiful rose garden in the southeast corner of Hyde Park. Here you find plenty of flowers, a long winding pergola and two fine fountains. The oldest of the two is the Artemis Fountain, which shows the Greek goddess of the Hunt Artemis (who is
better known by her Roman name Diana). The fountain was created in 1822 by Richard Westmacott, the sculptor of the nearby Achilles Statue. The other fountain is known as the Boy and Dolphin Fountain. It was created in 1862 by Alexander Munro and was originally placed in a sunken Victorian garden. In 1995 the statue was moved to its current location.
Joy of Life Fountain
Another fountain in Hyde Park is the Joy of Life Fountain. The fountain is decorated with bronze sculptures that float over a large circular basin. At the center are two adults, seemingly dancing and holding each others' arms. Around them are four statues of children who seem to hover over the water. The fountain, a work of sculptor Thomas Bayliss Huxley-Jones, was created in 1963. It is sometimes also
called the Four Winds Fountain.
No doubt, Hyde Park is a notable place to visit. You can come here every day for a walk or entertainment. There’re paths for pedestrians, bikers and even horse teams. Some of the paths are quiet isolated, so that one can enjoy walking alone, arrange a date or have a picnic. In summer and winter alike there’re squirrels scampering and looking into your pockets for seeds and nuts; in February lilies-of- the-valley began to blossom and the grass is green all the year round.

1.What did you know about Frederick Law Olmsted before reading the text?
2.What information did you find new reading the text?
3.What information contradicts your knowledge?
4.What information isn’t enough or understandable for you?
Frederick Law Olmsted,
Frederick Law Olmsted, (1822— 1903) is a famous American landscape architect. He is considered to be the father of American landscape architecture. He designed outstanding public parks, and he is also famous for designing wellknown urban parks, such as Central Park and Prospect Park in New York City .[1] . He put forth the principles of the City Beautiful Movement in America. He was also one of the first to introduce the idea of suburban development to the American landscape.
Olmsted was born in Hartford, Connecticut. His father, John Olmsted, a prosperous merchant, took a lively interest in nature. His mother, Charlotte Law (Hull) Olmsted, died when he was scarcely four years old. His step-mother, Mary Ann Bull shared her husband's strong love of nature and had perhaps a more cultivated taste.
When Olmsted was 14 years old, poisoning seriously affected his eyesight and limited his education. As an apprentice topographic engineer, he received the skills needed for his later career. When his sight improved, Olmsted attended lectures in science and engineering at Yale University. For a time he was interested in scientific farming, which he studied under George Geddes, who had a well-known model farm at Owego, N.Y.
Olmsted also had a significant career in journalism. In 1850 he traveled to England to visit public gardens, where he was greatly impressed by Joseph Paxton's Birkenhead Park, and subsequently wrote about his observations in Walks and Talks of an American Farmer in England in 1852
He dabbled in various professions until he was appointed a superintendent of Central Park in New York during the park's design phase in 1857. With his colleague Calvert Vaux, he designed the 843-acre park and oversaw its early development. Central Park was a tremendous success, he established the themes which are now closely associated with Olmsted. He used hills, trees and curved walkways to give visitors intriguing vistas and a feeling of serene isolation from the city. The design of the park had many aspects that would become trademarks of Olmsted's designs. There were winding paths, scenic views and large open areas for people to relax in. Olmsted and Vaux later formed a partnership and designed Brooklyn's Prospect Park as well as major parks in Buffalo, Louisville and elsewhere. Olmsted founded his own firm in 1883 in Brookline, Massachusetts and
77
conceived Boston's "Emerald Necklace" of green spaces. Among his many other projects, he played a major role in the 1870s redesign of the U.S. Capitol grounds and in the design of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Olmstead retired in 1895 and his firm was taken over by his son, Frederick Law Olmsted Jr.

Task 1. Read the text and answer the following questions:
1.Where is Wales located?
2.What is the official language of this country?
3.What types of singing and dancing are popular in Wales?
4.What other pastimes are popular?
Wales – The Land of Songs
Wales is one of the most beautiful countries in the United Kingdom. Cymru, as it known in Welsh, is surrounded by sea on three sides, whereas the eastern part of the country borders with England. The country is full of little towns, castles and picturesque seaside villages. Cardiff, the capital, is a bustling university town with an impressive castle, wonderful museums, galleries and lovely buildings.
English is the official language, but Welsh, one of the oldest languages in Europe, is still spoken in some parts of the country. In fact, a special committee was established in 1988 to protect the language and today Welsh school children are taught both languages. Welsh has a beautiful song-like quality, which is perhaps one reason why singing is such a favourite pastime. Playing music, including traditional instruments such as the harp, is another popular hobby.
Wales’ breathtaking beauty attracts travellers from around the world. Snowdonia, Britain second largest national park is located in the north of Wales. With its amazing forests, lakes, waterfalls and ancient burial sites, the park is a popular tourist attraction. In the north of the country, high above a pretty bay stands Caernarvon castle built in 1283 for the first Prince of Wales. In the west is St David’s, a quaint village by the sea that has the largest cathedral in Wales.
Wales has many wonderful traditions. The Welsh are proud of their culture. One of the oldest cultural competitions, The Royal national Eisteddfod, takes place every year at the beginning of August. It is an eight-day festival of music and poetry to celebrate Welsh language, art and culture. It is the largest and most popular festival in Wales and attracts thousands of visitors.
Task 2. Read the text once again and tell about Wales.

Task 1. Read the text and answer the following questions:
1.What are the most popular leisure activities and sports in New Zealand and Australia?
2.Which sport do they like best? Why?
Being a Sport – The “Ozzie and “Kiwi Way”
In Australia, the “Ozzies” (as Australians are coll oquially referred to) and the “Kiwis” (the affectionate name for new Zealanders) enjoy various sports. Thanks to the mainly mild weather, beautiful beaches, spectacular mountains and tropical forests, a wide range of outdoor activities are available. You can go scuba diving off a coral reef, skiing in the mountains, backpacking through a rainforest or even white-water rafting. There are plenty of team sports, too. In Australia, the locals take their football very seriously, as do the New Zealanders who love their
