11. Safety at work

Driving Question: how do engineers ensure safety? a Look at the photo of Chris Hadfield on this page.

23

b Make assumptions about this person deciding if these statements are true or false.

1.Chris Hadfield is a former Commander of the International Space Station.

2.Chris Hadfield is a teacher.

3.Chris Hadfield went to space four times.

4.Chris Hadfield performed songs on the space station.

c Watch the video and identify the problem the commander had.

d Use the content of the song to complete the Commander’s accident report (100-120

words). Write about:

what accident happened,

how it happened,

how to avoid problems in the future.

12. Copying nature

Driving Question: do nanotechnologies create more problems than solutions?

a Read the questions, take notes and prepare the answers.

1.What are nanotechnologies?

2.Are nanotechnologies something new?

3.What do we need nanotechnology for?

4.How could nanotechnologies change our lives over the next 20 years?

5.Are nanotechnologies currently used in products?

6.What negative aspects might nanotechnologies bring to society?

7.Will nanotechnologies affect the environment?

8.Are there health risks involved with nanotechnologies?

9.What is special about things on a nano scale?

10.Is it good to develop nanotechnology enhanced” prod ucts https://www.wisdomjobs.com/e-university/nanotechnology-interview-questions.html http://nanogloss.com/nanotechnology/advantages-and-disadvantages-of- nanotechnology/ https://nanoyou.eu/attachments/077_Questions%20%26%20answers%20- %20cards%20final.pdf

b Role play

You are going to take part in the meeting.

Today’s meeting: decide whether or not it is good to develop nanotechnology

enhanced” products.

c In groups write detailed role descriptions for:

Moderator - Consumer advocate – Nanoscientist - Ind ustry representative - Critical physician – Nanotechnologist. Describe how they wou ld tackle the situation.

d Choose one of the role. Create 'expert' ideas.Decide what questions you will answer. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

e Prepare for your role play.

After preparing, sequence the meeting. A role player summarizes his/her view on the problem and possible solutions. Other take notes. Student responds to the other proposals. Work out a plan of action.

f Follow up. Do you think the meeting was productive? Why? Could the meeting be more productive? How?

13. Economical vs. ecological

Driving Question: which is more important: economy or environment? a Case Study

Even the clearest graphic can be counterproductive if it does not contribute to the goals of the report or presentation.

25

Study the situation below.

An engineer prepared the bar graph in Figure 1 to guide a client in choosing an appropriate gadget.

The client looked at the graph and decided to buy the Lumia. “But wait” the engineer said. “The best gadget is the Ascend.”

Figure 1. Comparison of three weighted criteria.

Note that eco-friendliness is the most important consideration.

Task

In group try to create a visual that will incorporate all of the criteria and thereby be helpful for enabling the client to make a more informed and meaningful choice.

Hint: the type of graphic should allow the viewer to see all three criteria and compare across the three gadgets. Making use of the weighted value of each criterion might make the most meaningful representation.

14. What’s next?

So what?

Review your performance and goals.

How does what happened in this course compare with what you expected to happen?

How would you answer the questions you had at the beginning of the course?

What strategies did you use to learn? Which worke d well or didn't work well?

What feelings did you have during your discoveries - happiness, sadness, wonder, anger, curiosity?

What was the most useful to you in this course?

What’s next?

What new questions do you have?

How can you use what you know?

How can you use what you learned to do better nex t time?

What else do you want to explore?

What will you do next?

Go back to your resolutions wiki-page and add another line under your resolutions, stating how far you feel you have achieved them. Set goals for the future.
